Can Hughes Electronics e.Power concept (Ethernet over Power) offer a viable alternative to Fibre to the Masthead at cellular base stations?
The current move to Fibre to the masthead in cellular environments can provide a step change in data throughput but is it necessary Hughes Electronics ask?
Electrical cables already present provide the most economical solution to increasing data transit, and when aggregated with the existing Coaxial infrastructure can more than meet foreseeable requirements.
Power cable can transmit data at up to 500Mbps (Ethernet Over Power) and the relatively clean environment (of the masthead) can provide the perfect environment to maximise data-speeds.
Glyn Hughes the MD at Hughes Electronics said ‘The concept is an extension of our e.Power system, We already have the technology in place and the cost to deploy would be minimal, so the idea has a great deal of merit’ he went on to say ‘In my opinion mixed media should be the way forward in almost every comms environment, instead of wasting existing infrastructure, we should be thinking of conserving and adding to it where possible, Fibre should be seen as part of a whole mixed media solution’
