Hughes rewrite the rules on PIM

Stunned observers witness -183dBc test results on a 1 metre Jumper lead.

Hughes’ continuous development of Ultra Low PIM connectors yields another brilliant result in the battle against PIM in Cellular Networks.

Our radical substrate and design improvements demonstrate such superiority over metal counterparts that Roger Brown of Fastlane Design remarked, ‘The age of metal is dead, PIM is no longer the threat it was’.

pim-tester-sized2By thinking outside the box and not sticking to conventions, the R&D team at Hughes have developed far more economical and superior performing connectors. Understanding which existing connector features generate PIM helped our R&D team to significantly reduce the number of contributing factors resulting in the PIM levels of -183dBc in prototype connectors.
The innovative connector design outperformed typical metal 7/16 connector equivalents. Greg Rymar commented on the development work:

“We made a number of different design prototypes trying to identify the factors affecting Passive Intermodulation in connectors. By recognising elements of the typical connector design that contribute to PIM in a significant way, we were able to reduce them and improve the overall performance. Our ground-breaking design suppresses contributing factors by decreasing the number of and simplifying current paths, increasing and improving the contact surface and by dampening mechanical impacts on the connector performance.”

Our work on Ultra Low PIM connectors continues - Hughes research team is constantly working on improvements, experimental materials and setting new standards.
